The UK Government has recently unveiled the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging and Packaging Waste) Regulations 2024, marking a significant advancement in extended producer responsibility (EPR) for packaging.
While these regulations are undeniably groundbreaking, they impose strict limits on the types and sizes of packaging that qualify for full recycling coverage. At MYGroup, we believe these limitations fail to recognise the diverse and valuable recyclable materials – particularly quality plastics – that do not conform to the new guidelines.
Understanding the 2024 regulations and MYGroup’s role
The EPR regulations impose a mandate on producers to cover the entire net cost of managing household packaging waste. Producers are required to assess and report the recyclability of their packaging, with a Scheme Administrator overseeing the modulation of fees based on recyclability and environmental impact. This administrator is also responsible for distributing payments to local authorities.
Furthermore, recycling targets for materials such as plastic, paper, glass, and metals have been set through to 2030, with significant compliance requirements for reprocessors and exporters commencing in 2026. (It is worth noting that the recent budget announcement for October 30th, 2024, has now set a date of October 2025 specifically for plastics.)
How MYGroup supports local authorities beyond regulatory boundaries
As the new regulations impose size and material guidelines that may restrict the recycling of unconventional plastic items, MYGroup offers a flexible and industry-leading waste management framework to assist local authorities in collecting and processing these materials.
Our innovative approach enables local authorities to benefit from efficient and effective collection processes for high-quality plastics and other valuable recyclable materials that could otherwise be excluded from the recycling stream.
By partnering with MYGroup, local authorities can rely on:
- A comprehensive in-house network
MYGroup’s infrastructure is tailored to handle various packaging waste streams, ensuring that quality recyclables are processed wholly within our facilities. This enables a transparent supply chain for regulatory and auditing purposes, even if waste items fall outside the new regulatory framework. - Specialised processing capabilities
We excel in processing materials that may not meet standard guidelines but are nonetheless crucial for achieving sustainability objectives. - Compliance and beyond
Our commitment aligns with the EPR objectives while also providing local authorities a pathway to minimise their environmental impact by collecting a broader range of materials.
MYGroup is now one of the largest consumer takeback system providers in the UK. We firmly believe that takeback initiatives are vital in facilitating materials recycling directly from residents and consumers, fostering a symbiotic relationship with local authority partners. This collaboration not only enhances recycling efforts but also creates opportunities for further investment and job creation – benefits that incineration simply cannot offer.
The 2024 regulations represent a critical step forward; however, at MYGroup, we view this as an opportunity to assist local authorities in meeting and exceeding their recycling goals. By incorporating materials that bolster a circular economy – yet may not conform to narrow regulatory definitions – we can ensure a more inclusive and effective recycling process.
We encourage local authorities to partner with MYGroup to develop a collection process that guarantees quality materials are managed efficiently and effectively – without compromise. Together, we can pave the way for a sustainable future.
