Materials Recycling Facility (MRF)

Recovery for co-mingled waste and recyclables

Efficient separation and recovery for recycling and reprocessing waste

For a variety of reasons, some businesses need to put all their rubbish into one bin or skip, which contaminates otherwise recyclable materials. General waste at most businesses will include paper and cardboard, packaging materials, plastics and metals alongside other items.

How does a Materials Recycling Facility work?

A Materials Recycling Facility or MRF is a deceptively simple – yet vital – facility for recycling waste. Its objective is to produce clean, sorted and segregated materials as efficiently as possible, ready for further recycling. By accepting co-mingled waste, we reduce the amount of space required on your sites for bins or skips, and the separation – both manual and mechanical – and subsequent recycling is all done at our facilities.
Yorkshire Materials Recycling Facility – tipping and sorting

Tipping

On initial tipping – or totting – larger items are picked and separated: brick, rubble, cardboard and plastics.

Yorkshire Materials Recycling Facility - cardboard and paper recycling

Paper & Cardboard

Papers, packaging, boxes, magazines, envelopes etc. are removed and baled on-site, ready for further processing and final recycling.

Yorkshire Materials Recycling Facility – ferrous and non-ferrous metals recovery and recycling

Ferrous & Non-Ferrous Metals

Ferrous metals (e.g. steel cans) are recovered by an overhead magnet system, ready for baling or recycling. Non-ferrous (e.g. copper, aluminium) is hand-sorted.

Yorkshire Materials Recycling Facility – plastic separation and recycling

Plastics

Recyclable plastics are removed for onward processing, granulation and recycling, and the ‘non-recyclable’ plastics (single-use, films etc.) are used by our board manufacturing facility – closing the loop on plastic waste.

Yorkshire MRF – glass recycling

Glass

Separated glass is either sent for onward recycling or used to make 100% recycled concrete products at our Goole site.

Yorkshire MRF - screened fines

Further screening

Organic fractions, sand, aggregates, pebbles, smaller stones and glass are recovered through screening ready for further processing at our inerts facility.

Retain site space, save time and money and get environmentally responsible zero waste to landfill with co-mingled waste and recycling services for your business.
