Wood and timber waste recycling

Carving out value from every cut

The market leader in circular wood recycling

MYGroup is the UK leader in wood and timber recycling, providing clients with maximum value recovery across all types of waste wood – from clean off-cuts to hazardous treated timber – all within UK supply chains.

Our fully integrated service covers compliant nationwide collection, in-house grading and processing, before recovery and remanufacture into new outputs, materials and products, enabling clients to reduce emissions, avoid landfill and demonstrate credible progress against Net Zero and ESG targets.

Unlike many recyclers focused on only the most profitable streams, MYGroup is engineered to handle the full picture – the hard-to-recycle, composite, contaminated and unconventional materials others overlook. It’s what we call ‘the 25%’, and it’s what sets us apart, turning even the most overlooked wood and timber into lasting, regenerative value.

The rising stakes for wood waste recovery

The UK generates approximately 4.5 million tons of waste wood each year from a range of sources:
R

Construction, demolition and infrastructure projects

Timber formwork, scaffolding boards, hoardings, flooring, joists, pallets, crates and fencing.
R

Retail, logistics and distribution

Pallets, packaging crates and boxes, cable reels and more.
R

Manufacturing and joinery operations

Off-cuts, shavings, MDF and chipboard scraps, sawdust, presswood and rejected furniture components from carpentry and timber production.
R

Household renovations

DIY waste, broken furniture, doors, decking, fencing, shelving and other domestic timber.

Despite a mature market where more than 90% of wood waste is now recycled, reused or recovered for energy – largely thanks to established biomass and panelboard sectors – key challenges persist.

One major issue is poor segregation. Even clean, high-quality Grade A timber can be rejected for reuse if mixed with painted or varnished materials, metal fixings or plastic wrap. Meanwhile, hazardous or treated wood, such as CCA timber or creosote-soaked railway sleepers, must be managed separately under strict regulatory controls.

Market, regulatory and climate pressures are also intensifying. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) now includes wood packaging, meaning businesses that use wood pallets and crates must report their usage volumes and contribute financially to end-of-life recycling. Furthermore, industry bodies such as the Wood Recyclers’ Association (WRA) and Wood Panel Industries Federation have called for UK packaging recycling targets to rise.

Compounding these issues, the UK wood recycling sector faced notable turbulence in late 2025. Extended outages at several biomass energy plants and panelboard factories led to a severe backlog of lower-grade wood, with many recyclers hitting storage limits and gate fees spiking as facilities temporarily ceased accepting new loads.

This volatility highlights the importance of partnering with a stable, UK-based recycling provider that can ensure business continuity year-round.

Wood waste drop-offs and collections without the friction

MYGroup operates a specialist wood and timber recovery facility at its Sherburn in Elmet site in North Yorkshire, where clients can deposit loads of waste timber for processing.

The company also manages a fleet ranging from smaller trucks to articulated lorries, enabling the pick-up of wood waste from any site and handling of awkward or high-volume loads with ease. MYGroup also supplies a full range of containers, from yard skips for lighter fractions to Rolonof bins for bulkier material. Segregated at source and kept dry, your wood waste retains its highest possible recovery value.

Our expert teams can even assist with on-site clearances of timber structures or demolition wood, safely dismantling and removing large items.

MYGroup accepts and processes all grades of waste wood, from clean off-cuts to hazardous, chemically treated timber. Our capabilities extend to this 25% of wood waste most recyclers can’t – or won’t – handle: awkward formats, unusual grades, hazardous timber and composite materials.

Every load is sorted and directed to its most suitable, legally compliant end use under Environment Agency permits, maximising resource value and minimising environmental impact.

Because all services are delivered in-house, clients benefit from streamlined operations, minimal disruption and full traceability via our custom tracking and reporting system. This includes:
R
Certified weights at the point of drop-off or collection
R
clear grading and material categorisation
R
carbon and circularity metrics aligned with ESG and EPR standards
R
complete documentation for waste and compliance
From wood waste to high-value resources

Unlike providers who simply collect and export, we manage the entire recovery process in-house at our Sherburn site. All incoming wood is graded, decontaminated and manually or mechanically treated to remove nails, plastic, metal fittings and other contaminants. Clean and treated fractions are separated, while any embedded hazards, such as asbestos or lead-based coatings, are identified and handled safely.

For branded or sensitive wood assets, such as product displays, proprietary fixtures or packaging, we also offer secure destruction with full certification, ensuring peace of mind and brand protection.

ReFactory™: Where waste wood becomes design with purpose

Beyond MYGroup’s standard recovery processes for waste wood, the company’s ReFactory™ business – specialising in the creative reuse and design of materials for B2B and consumer markets – ensures material of all grades can be incorporated.

From crafting some of the world’s most sustainable retail displays and point-of-sale units to building one-of-a-kind furniture pieces out of reclaimed timber and mixed materials, ReFactory ensures that no wood waste is deemed ‘unrecyclable.’ By using skilled craftsmanship and design, ReFactory can take salvaged off-cuts, unusual cuts or even broken furniture, upcycling them into high-quality products.

ReFactory not only diverts wood from disposal, but also creates a unique story for clients looking to showcase sustainability. The team collaborates with brands on closed-loop recovery project – turning recovered waste from schemes into bespoke products for use in everything from special lines and collections and brand activations to workspace fit-outs and staff engagement initiatives.

Wood and timber waste grades

MYGroup accepts and processes all recognised grades of waste wood, ensuring each is identified and sent to the optimal recovery route.

s

Grade A

CLEAN WOOD – High-quality untreated wood, typically from pallets, crates, packaging and off-cuts from manufacturing. MYGroup also prioritises reuse for Grade A material wherever possible; for example, repairing pallets or repurposing off-cuts into new products, or diverting to a range of uses, including landscaping mulch or animal bedding.

s

Grade B

INDUSTRIAL FEEDSTOCK – Mixed low-grade wood, including Grade A and additional material from construction and demolition (e.g. softwood, chipboard, MDF) without hazardous treatments. Processed into high-purity wood chips for UK panelboard manufacturers, locking away carbon in chipboard and fibreboard.

s

Grade C

FUEL GRADE – Mixed low-grade wood, including Grade A and additional material from construction and demolition (e.g. softwood, chipboard, MDF) without hazardous treatments. Processed into high-purity wood chips for UK panelboard manufacturers, locking away carbon in chipboard and fibreboard.

s

Grade D

HAZARDOUS WOOD – Wood treated or coated with hazardous substances, such as CCA preservatives, creosote (e.g. telegraph poles) or lead-based paints. MYGroup is fully licensed to accept, segregate and store Grade D wood under Environment Agency permit, before arranging specialist, compliant disposal.

MYGroup is redefining what wood and timber waste recovery can mean – not just a path to compliance, but a platform for regeneration. Through circular recovery, creative reuse and educational initiatives for the next generation, we help clients meet today’s obligations while building a future with fewer skips and far more impact…where every plank plays its part
