We’re pleased to announce that our state-of-the-art Board Production Facility in Hull is now accredited for PRN.
Supporting the use of the material we recover from our food waste depackaging processes – after removal of foods that go to our animal feed production or anaerobic digestion (green energy) – the packaging is washed, granulated and processed before being remanufactured into a new product, all on-site.
What is a Packaging Recycling Note?
Introduced in 1997 by the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations, Packaging Recycling Notes (PRNs) support the funding mechanism for waste and recycling infrastructure in the UK. This legislation places a PRN purchasing obligation on companies (‘Producers’) handling over 50 tons of packaging and with turnovers of over £2m. With the material these Producers are responsible for generally ending up in the UK waste system – using the principle of ‘producer pays’ – they must buy sufficient PRNs in order to offset this.
PRNs help recycling; the funding received from their sale by accredited reprocessors can only be used for purposes to benefit the waste system, such as new recycling technology and equipment.
As a family business, our ethos has always been to keep material here in the UK, and this decision reflects our commitment to tackling those difficult wastes that others struggle to deal with.
The key to our success is traceability, a willingness to innovate, and our determination to see the end product from every item recycled. Nothing goes to waste.
Although we also deal with more commonly-recycled plastics, we are focusing on using the PRNs to increase capacity for the most challenging mixed plastic streams. Our equipment is specially-designed, but our skill lies in blending different plastics together and creating products out of material that would traditionally end up in landfill.
Mike Derbyshire, MYGroup Hull Site Manager
We have never previously attempted to claim PRNs despite recycling tens of thousands of tons of packaging waste every year, as we have always felt it would be a false claim if we had simply processed it and not transformed it into something new.
Now we are doing that, we can.
A true PRN from collection to full recovery and reuse. Fully closed-loop recycling for packaging.
